About Bedok

Bedok is a mature town and is one of the oldest towns in Singapore. The name Bedok derived from the Malay word for fishing boat, and it was the site of a fishing village called Telok Kurau. Bedok was a popular place for the Malays to take a break from their fishing activities. The popularity of this place led to the development of the Bedok area. In the 1960s and 1970s, many Malay families began to move into the area and the population grew as more and more people were employed in the construction of the many new houses and buildings that were being built in the area, especially in the 1960s.

Bedok is one of the oldest towns in Singapore because there are a lot of things about bedok that people often forget about. Bedok was named after a type of tree that was abundant in the area. The tree was called the "bedou" tree and the name of the estate was derived from it. Bedok is one of the first HDB towns to be built under Phase 2 of the Housing and Development Board's (HDB) public housing programme in 1959. It was a time when many immigrants were moving into these new HDB towns in Singapore because the first wave of HDB towns were mainly populated by the Chinese who moved into these areas after the Japanese Occupation of Singapore was over.

Bedok New Town was officially named on 11 February 1973, but the history of Bedok goes back much further. The name 'Bedok' is derived from the Malay word 'beduh', meaning 'to grow'. Bedok New Town is a mature estate in Singapore, but it is one of the first towns to be built in the 1950s. It is known for its large HDB developments. There are many amenities and conveniences of living in Bedok New Town. With its many new and old facilities, Bedok New Town is a good place to live in.

Bedok is an estate in Singapore, located very near to Tanah Merah. Its history dates back to 1960, when the government of Singapore was planning to build a new town in the East of Singapore. The town was to accommodate a growing population. Several plans to develop the area were proposed by the government, the most famous of which was the Bidadari Scheme. The Bidadari Scheme was a plan to relocate families living in the slums at Katong and Siglap to new HDB flats in Bedok. In 1961, the Bidadari Scheme was approved, and the first batch of flats was ready in 1962. Due to the increasing population in Singapore, the Bidadari Scheme was changed to the Henderson-line. This meant that the families were moved to the new HDB flats in Bedok, and the flats in Bidadari were demolished. The urban development at Bedok began in 1962, and the first blocks of flats were ready in 1963. The name of the town was then changed from Bidadari to Bedok.

Bedok Point Shopping Mall

Bedok Point Shopping Mall is located along Bedok Central, and was built on the site of the former Bedok and Changi theatres, and was the first air-conditioned mall in Bedok until the opening of Bedok Mall in 2013 . It was officially opened on 26 April 2011 and was a 4-storey mall (with 2 basement storeys).

It had a range of retail units, entertainment outlets, a bookstore and food outlets, among its 76 specialty tenants, including anchors such as Harvey Norman and mainly restaurants and cafes. In 2011, the mall was divested into Frasers Centrepoint Trust by its developer, Frasers Centrepoint Ltd.

When it first started, Bedok Point was touted as a food haven that operated late into the night, and had reportedly managed to attract over 900,000 shoppers every month in its first several months of operations.

On 1 July 2021, it was announced that the mall will be demolished on 1 July 2022 and redeveloped to a residential development with commercial units on the ground floor, called Sky Eden @ Bedok. This was due to the decline of footfall owing to the multiple openings of Viva Business Park (Decathlon and Harvey Norman), Heartbeat at Bedok and Djitsun Mall over the recent years

Bedok Point mall officially shut its doors on Jul. 1, 2022; the tenants revealed that the redevelopment was expected as the 11-year-old mall had been experiencing poor footfall.

Its redevelopment into a mixed development provides the opportunities for buyers to snag a residential development that is located a mere 300m away from Bedok MRT.

Take a look at the Sky Eden @ Bedok Virtual Tour to see a drone view and also designs of the showflat and showunits.
